Requirements for The Legal Marriage Ceremony

For the wedding ceremony or the renewal of the vows you need the following documents:

Passports
translated into Spanish by an official translator with an “Apostille attached”. (An official translator can be found in the yellow pages of your city).

If you are a US Citizen, you need an "Apostille", which is a form of international certification. The "Apostille" is requested from the entity who registered births in the county or state you were born at (usually the Secretary of State or the Department of Health). You should send your birth certificates to the Secretary of State and enclose a letter stating that you are getting married in Mexico and that you need an Apostille. They will then return your documents.

You will need to send your birth certificate to such entity, along with a letter stating that you are getting married in Mexico and that you need an Apostille. They will attach this "Apostille" to the birth certificate and will then return the documents to you.

If you are Canadian, please contact the nearest Mexican Embassy or Consulate in order to legalize your Birth Certificate. For more information please contact the web page below:

http://www.embamexcan.com/CONSULAR/FQGettingMarried.shtml

If you are British, you need to contact the Legalization Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Judge might keep the birth certificates, thus we recommend you to bring certified copies rather than the originals.

The birth certificates do not need to be translated into Spanish. In case the Judge requests to have a Spanish version, they will have to be translated in Mexico by an official local translator (at an extra charge).

Copy of divorce decree (in case you are divorced). It is necessary to be divorced at least one year in advance of your Civil Ceremony in Mexico. This is a government law and there are absolutely no exceptions here. The divorce certificate has to be translated into Spanish (if Bride is divorced). “Apostille” is mandatory and needed.

Tourist cards - which every foreigner obtains on the aircraft on the way down to Mexico.

Please note that the judge will NOT perform the legal ceremony if he does not receive all the necessary documents.

Blood test - it has to be made at the hotel in Mexico and it costs 154 USD per couple (to be paid in cash to the doctor).

4 witnesses with their picture ID (passport or driver's license) and a copy of their tourist card, which they will receive on the airplane. In case you do not bring any witnesses, the hotel will provide them.

Important
The bride and groom and their witnesses have to be in Mexico for at least 4 working days before the wedding, to get all the necessary legal papers arranged.

The judge does NOT accept ceremonies for: Sundays, Easter week, the 1st and 2nd of November, the 24th and 25th of December and the 1st of January.

Please note that once you get the marital contract you have to inform your local authorities about the change of marital status and proceed to register your marriage.

The wedding couple and their witnesses must be in Mexico for at least 4 complete business days (Saturdays, Sundays & Public Mexican Holidays are not included) before the wedding, not counting the arrival date or the wedding date, to meet with the wedding coordinator and submit all the required documents and go over the wedding details.

Marriage License Apostille (for USA and British Citizens) – After the wedding you will receive your Marriage License. In order to make this valid in your country, we will obtain the Apostille for the Marriage License as well. The procedure takes 3 to 5 months, as soon as we have it back, you would receive by courier mailing. After that, it has to be translated into English in you country and registered in the city hall.

Marriage License Original Copies – every extra copy is 10 USD payable in cash. This procedure takes around one month. As soon as we receive it we will mail it by courier mailing.

The marriage is legal only in Mexico. If you want to make it legal in your country you have to pay $ 45 USD extra in order to take the Apostille. You will receive this paper by mail 2 months after the wedding.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE BLESSING CEREMONY

The Blessing is performed by an English speaking Minister. He reads parts from the Bible, he blesses your wedding rings and you exchange your vows. The blessing is a religious ceremony, not a legal ceremony, therefore you will have to be married before you come to Mexico.

BOOK YOUR WEDDING

Due to the high amount of weddings that we have we kindly ask you to request the wedding date as soon as possible. We have a policy of having only one wedding per day to ensure that it is your special day.

If you would like to reserve a date, we require a written request with the couples complete names, the type of ceremony, and approximate number of guests. The Wedding will be charged the room account and will be settled during your stay, before the wedding day. The hotel accepts credit cards (Master Card, Visa & American Express), travelers checks and cash.

Here at the Iberostar Tucan and Quetzal, we understand that all couples have their own ideas of how they want their special day to be. Between now and when you walk down the aisle, you may have a lot of questions. Please do not hesitate to contact our Wedding Coordinator Mrs. Catalina Cortez or the Wedding Assistant Miss. Amanda Pillow. No question is too small or too big! We are here to take out the stress of planning a wedding in a different country.

The Judge does not perform weddings on Sundays, Public Mexican Holidays, Easter, November 1st and 2nd (All Saint’s day), December 24th and 25th, New Year 31st and 1st.

If you would like to bring some extra details to decorate the tables such as candles, sea shells, “Just Married” confetti, little sombrero hats, little bags with wine charms, etc., you are welcome to do so.

If you are interested in a private event for your wedding party, we can offer you a cocktail party or you can rent the disco for your celebrations.

Cocktail Party

If you would like to have a pre-dinner celebration, we can arrange a private cocktail party of at least 20 people. You can choose from a selection of National or International brand alcohol. Also, if you would like light snacks, we offer a selection of hot and cold appetizers (toast with smoked salmon and cheese, calamari, chicken fingers, quesadillas and fried shrimp). There are several areas around the hotel where the cocktail party can take place. We can add some Mexican decoration to give the party a nice Mexican touch.

Also, if you prefer a different time, please let us know in advance, so that we can inform the Judge or the Minister and confirm his availability.

Q. Can we rent tuxedos when we get to Mexico?

A. Included in the packages is music from a selection of CDs, or you can bring your own favorite ones with you. There is an extra charge for live music. A very popular option is the Mariachis.
